We always recommed buying the best high speed steel (HSS) tools you can afford. With due care and attention they can last a lifetime. Poor quality or badly sharpened tools can lead to frustration and can often be the cause of a novice becoming disillusioned and giving up the hobby. Sharpening is critical to effective turning and is therefore an important skill to learn. A range of sharpening systems can be found in our Sharpening section.
