Power Carving Course
Learn how to add a decorative touch to your work at our Power Carving course!
Held in Sheffield, this is an instructional one-day hands-on course with tutor, Mick Hanbury. This course is suitable for intermediate to advanced woodturners. Participants must possess the knowledge and confidence to remove the inner surface of a bowl or platter on a lathe. This is not suitable for beginners.
Learn to add depth and intricate detail to your woodturning projects using tools such as an angle grinder, rasp cutters, and wire brushes. In the morning, a piece of timber will be provided for experimentation with various tools to achieve different texturing styles and techniques. In the afternoon, you will apply your newly acquired skills to your own projects. Towards the end of the course, participants will remove the inner surface of their bowl/platter after power carving the outer surface.
Students are required to bring their own turned bowls and/or platters for hands-on work. For optimal results, we recommend a bowl/platter size of 10–12 inches in diameter and 2–3 inches deep.
This course is tailored for woodturners eager to elevate their turned pieces into art or sculptures, suitable for display in homes or art galleries.
Our facilities include all personal safety protection and our fully insured workshop is equipped with dust extraction systems. All tools and materials required for the course will be provided, not including two pieces of your own turned work.
What you need to bring

- Smock or protective clothing
- Two of your own turned bowl/platters
Hot drinks and bottled water will be available.
We also advise that you wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and clothes you don't mind getting a bit messy.
Times
The day runs from 10am to 4pm with a break in the middle for lunch. We ask that you try to arrive between 9:30am - 9:45am to meet the other students and have an initial chat with your tutor before the course begins.

In order to ensure a high ratio of student/mentor time, our Power Carving courses are limited to a maximum of three students, ensuring each student has enough personal space and receives the maximum help and assistance necessary. Places are sold on a first come, first served basis. We advise that you book early to avoid disappointment!
